Speculation has been rife all Summer as to the future of Brian Howard and today his fate was sealed after the following statement:

Released onwww.barnsleyfc.co.uk part of the Club statement reads as follows:

On Monday September 22nd, 2008, the Board of Barnsley FC met with Brian Howard and his representatives. Patrick Cryne and manager Simon Davey were also in attendance. Brian confirmed directly to the parties present that he wished to leave the Club and did not wish to discuss a new contract with the Reds.

As a consequence the board resolved that, in the interests of all parties, Brian Howard would be allowed to leave the Club at the earliest opportunity, subject to Barnsley FC receiving compensation.

Howard has been a great servant to the Club and of course played a vital role in the Tyke’s amazing run in the F.A Cup last season.

A free transfer from Swindon back in 2005, the 25-year-old was snapped up by former manager Andy Ritchie as part of his rebuiding of the squad.

Howard clocked up 137 appearances for the Reds, netting 28 goals, and looks to set to join one of two teams on-loan, one of the teams is believed to be Barnsley’s South Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United.

Wherever you go, Brian, you have the backing of Vital Barnsley – good luck with your future career and thanks for the memories.
