Mark Robins’ Reaction To Defeat

Speaking to the club’s official website, Barnsley boss Mark Robins said that he thought ‘it was a typical derby game and there was a lot of passion and commitment from both sides.’

Looking back at the game I would have to disagree with Mr Robins. There was passion and commitment. It was from both sides but there certainly wasn’t ‘a lot’ from Barnsley. They were second to the ball most of the time and barely troubled Lee Grant in the Wednesday goal. Having said that, Iain Hume looked like he had more urgency in him than anyone when he entered the field of play.

Robins went on: ‘I think we beat ourselves today.’ Again, I disagree. We had the opportunities to get shots on goal and didn’t take enough of them. The perfect illustration of this is the fact that our only goal was in actual fact a mis-hit cross from Emil Hallfredsson, something that’s worryingly becoming a regular occurance from the Icelandic international. If only we were always fortunate enough to have them drop into the oppositions net.

Robins said: ‘We conceded two poor goals but we had the ball in their area enough to probably warrant something a bit more.’

I concur with Robins here, the goals were poor, particularly their first which was a simple tap in that Tommy Spurr had all the time in the world to do. Johnson’s finish was just a good end to a lucky flick on over the top but Luke Steele should have done better.

Robins also said that he thought the Reds ‘looked like we could have had two penalties.’ Certainly the one that springs to mind is the one in the second half when Hume was turning just inside the Wednesday box and having his shirt pulled but we can’t rely on penalty shouts to get us back in the game. Bogdanovic should have done much better when through one on one in the first half.

All in all, I’m more disappointed with the way we played rather than the fact we lost to Sheffield Wednesday and that is saying something.
