Barnsley’s chances of retaining the services of Birmingham City loan striker Garry O’Connor took a huge blow today with the news that Blues striker James McFadden will be out for up to six months.

O’Connor made his Barnsley debut on Tuesday night against Leeds United at Oakwell and equalised for the Reds just before half-time in their 5-2 victory.

The Scottish international has signed for a month initially but Mark Robins is keen to try and keep a hold of the marksman beyond that month. He told Barnsley’s official site: ‘While he’s here I just want him to enjoy it. If he plays like he did on Tuesday night I’d love him to stay. He’s set off well for us. I just hope he can maintain that.’

Birmingham City are likely to want to recall O’Connor as soon as possible however, following the injury to fellow Scottish international James McFadden.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Not necessarily in fact probably not at all. McFadden’s loss will be felt most on the wing where we have cover. I doubt it would lead to an early recall for O’Connor and most Birmingham fans want you to keep him.

Permanently? Surely not? He’s a workhorse and a powerhouse!
