Reds suffer in Suffolk

The Reds haven’t scored a goal in over seven and a half hours of football.

Barnsley once again failed to score a single goal as they slumped to yet another defeat in the Coca Cola Championship.

Two gifts from Barnsley’s Mr reliable, Heinz Muller, and a strike from Owen Garvan allowed Ipswich to cruise to an easy victory at Portman Road.

Despite going through the entire season without a goal, Simon Davey kept faith in the hard-working Jon Macken up-front alongside Iain Hume.

Jim Magilton’s men took the lead in the twentieth minute through Jon Stead. The former Sheffield United man was delighted as the Red’s ‘keeper gifted him with an easy finish after a poor clearance from the big German.

The goal may have been against the run of play although the Tykes were failing to seriously threaten Richard Wright in the home goal.

Barnsley did however come close to an equaliser through Dennis Souza, the big Brazilian connected well with a Diego Leon corner but his effort was blocked tremendously by Richard Wright.

After half time Barnsley failed to bounce back after their team talk from Simon Davey.

Ipswich doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Counago was initially denied by a block from Moore, but the rebound was hammered home by Owen Garvan past a despairing Heinz Muller.

Heinz Muller’s second mistake of the night, and his Oakwell career, allowed a tame 30-yard Campo effort to squirm through and into the net, sealing a miserable night to forget for the Reds.

The Reds failed to make the most of around seventeen corners during the ninety minutes.

The only glimmer of hope for the Tykes was the introduction of the Football League’s and Barnsley’s, youngest ever player in the shape of Reuben Noble-Lazarus. Reuben made his debut at the age of 15-years and 45 days.
