Herbie Kane scored an injury-time penalty as Barnsley made another late comeback to draw 1-1 at relegation-battling Shrewsbury Town.

Shrewsbury scored early then both sides missed chances before the late penalty meant that the points were shared.

The Reds stay fourth, six points off the top two and four clear in top six.

Reds boss Neill Collins watched the game from the stands after receiving a third yellow card of the season in the 2 – 1 victory over Leyton Orient on Saturday.

There were two changes from that last-gasp win over Leyton Orient. Jon Russell came in for the suspended Luca Connell while Corey O’Keeffe replaced the benched Barry Cotter at right wing-back. Donovan Pines dropped out of the squad to play for the under 21s, so Jamie McCart was back on the bench after injury alongside teenage midfielder Vimal Yoganathan. Watters was also in that under 21s team with Pines.

Shrewsbury took the lead in the seventh minute when Daniel Udoh ran down the left of the box and whipped in a low cross which was bundled in by Tom Bloxham or possibly Nicky Cadden.

It was almost 2-0 when a right-wing corner was headed just wide by Morgan Feeney.

After another slow start, Barnsley started to get back in the game. Their first attempt was a curling effort by John McAtee which was well-saved after he cut in from the left wing following an Adam Phillips pass.

Cadden then blazed over from 20 yards after a defensive error let in Devante Cole on the right and he crossed low.

Phillips’ low cross after good work by Russell was saved by goalkeeper Marko Marosi onto McAtee and the goalkeeper caught it again.

Cole had the ball in the back of the net on the stroke of half-time but it was ruled out for offside, after Cadden played a right-wing cross back into the box.

In the second half, McAtee hit the side netting from the right of the box from a good O’Keeffe pass.

Shrewsbury’s Aaron Pierre scuffed a shot wide in the box after a scramble following a corner, then Udoh shot straight at Roberts from 25 yards.

Phillips’ cross from the right was dropped by the goalkeeper, leading to scramble on the line but Cole could not force the ball home.

Pierre headed wide at the back post from a left-wing free-kick.

Marosi then made yet another outstanding save after Cadden’s 20-yard shot was deflected upwards.

At the other end, Roberts saved a Tom Bayliss shot from the left of the box wide of his near post.

Substitute Conor Grant almost scored with his first touch but shot over from 15 yards out after a corner was half-cleared.

A Josh Earl cross went just wide of the near post from substitute Sam Cosgrove.

But the equaliser arrived in injury-time when de Gevigney was tripped in the box following a long throw by substitute Cotter, Kane smashed the penalty into the top right corner.

Barnsley (3-5-2): Williams, de Gevigney, Earl; O’Keeffe (Cotter 80mins), Phillips, Russell (Cosgrove 63), Kane, Cadden; McAtee (Grant 80), Cole.

Unused: Killip, Marsh,, McCart, Yoganathan.

Shrewsbury (4-3-3): Marosi; Feeney, Pierre, Dunkley, Benning; Winchester, Hinchy (Sraha 78mins), Shipley (Bennett 78), Bayliss, Udoh, Bloxham.

Up next is a trip to another relegation threatened side in Fleetwood on Saturday where I expect a decent away crowd with a night out in Blackpool so close.
