The November Pattern

A quick look back over the month of November where the Reds picked up nine points out of a possible eighteen.

A simple results pattern was completed yesterday. From the beginning of November, it went:

Win, Lose, Win, Lose, Win, Lose.

Saturday 1st November 2008:

Charlton 1 Barnsley 3

Jon Macken’s early double and a first Barnsley goal for Darren Moore sent the Reds into a three goal half time lead. The Tykes were on fire and played some really neat football as Anderson de Silva controlled the middle of the park against a second-rate Charlton outfit. This win was Barnsley’s first away victory since their 2-1 triumph over Preston in April.

Saturday 8th November 2008:

Barnsley 1 Sheff Utd 2

Games just don’t come much more controversial than this. Three goals, a controversial penalty, two Reds cards, and a violent assault all jam-packed into 90 minutes of football. James Beattie bagged a brace for the Blades and Kayode Odejayi hit back late on with a cool header. It was later revealed of the horrific injury suffered by Iain Hume, ending in intensive care with a fractured skull and internal bleeding.

Saturday 15th November 2008:

Barnsley 2 Watford 1

Miguel Mostto’s first goal of the season and a strike from Stephen Foster secured three points to be dedicated towards injured striker, Iain Hume. Barnsley had much better of the play in the first half, with Jon Macken and Odejayi going close. But it was the two goals in two minutes that saw the Reds snatch all three points in the second half.

Saturday 22nd November 2008:

Preston 2 Barnsley 1

A blunder by the referee allowed Preston to open the scoring as Dennis Souza was left in a heap after being wrestled to the ground by Neil Mellor. Jamal Campbell-Ryce equalised for the Reds before half time. The Lilywhites snatched the extra two points late on with St Ledger’s lucky deflected strike finding the net.

Monday 24th November 2008:

Barnsley 3 Burnley 2

Two teams that people surprisingly get mixed up about met in front of the Sky Cameras on a cold Monday night. The Reds never really got out of second gear but were one goal to the good at half time thanks to Jon Macken’s cool finish. The Second half saw Barnsley’s previous unlucky streak end as a Campbell-Ryce shot deflected in off Whaley who was in an offside position. The Third came via another deflection, this time from a Diego Leon strike after a short corner. Burnley’s substitute, Martin Paterson, bagged a brace as Burnley rallied in the later stages.

Saturday 29th November 2008:

Nottingham Forest 1 Barnsley 0

Barnsley threw everything at under-pressure boss, Colin Calderwood’s men but came away from Nottinghamshire with nothing to show. Joe Garner nodded the hosts into the lead on 36 minutes. Stephen Foster should have equalised late on but his header cracked the bar.

All in all, not a terrible month for the Reds, picking up half of the possible points available. The Tykes conceded nine goals, scoring ten, and never lost a match by more than one goal.
