A Night To Forget

Some results stick in your mind. Some performances stick in your mind. Others are forgettable. Unfortunately the result of this game lives long in the memory of many Tykes fans, some 6 years on.

Paul Hart’s Barnsley had progressed through to the second round of the Carling Cup at Darlington with goals from Paul Reid and Chris Shuker, but when they came up against Premier League opposition they had a night to forget.

Manchester City boasted international quality players like Danny Mills, Sylvain Distin and Shaun Wright-Phillips and at the City of Manchester Stadium, duly demolished their inferior opponents.

Goals from Joey Barton, Willo Flood and Shaun Wright-Phillips added to braces from Antoine Sibierski and future-Red Jonathan Macken routed the Tykes, who’s only reply came in the form of a solitary goal from Barry Conlon who slotted home a sloppy back pass by Danny Mills just after half-time.

It was a rather embarrassing night for the Reds supporters, watching their heroes capitulate against a team who five years earlier, they had given a very close race for 2nd place in the Championship and even beaten 2-1 at home in front of a capacity crowd at Oakwell.

Man City: Waterreus, Thatcher (Jordan 48), Distin (Sommeil 45), Mills, Jihai, Flood, Barton, Bosvelt, Sibierski, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Macken (Bradley Wright-Phillips 46).
