Barnsley battle for a point

Iain Hume had the chance to steal all three points from the south coast this afternoon but somehow fluffed his effort after rounding off ‘keeper Kelvin Davies.

Three points would have kept the demons off Simon Davey’s back, although a point away from home is always a good result.

Simon Davey made two changes to his starting eleven that lost 1-0 to Cardiff in midweek, Heinz Muller replaced Luke Steele in goal and Anderson de Silva made his long-awaited return at the expense of Jon Macken.

It was understood to be a bizzare 4-5-1 formation, with Kayode Odejayi patrolling the front-line on his own. £1.2million man Hume was out wide on the left, with Howard, Anderson and Colace in the middle and Campbell-Ryce on the right-wing. The defence was an unchanged back four.

Darrne Moore made some very important blocks early on, with the Reds hoping to collect their second clean sheet of the season. Heinz Muller was enjoying his first game since the end of January, doing well to keep out the controversial Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Jake Thompson should have won the game on 83 minutes as a slip by Kozluk gave way to a one-on-one but the big German denied Thompson who shot straight down Muller’s throat.

A minute later came the golden opportunity for Iain Hume to bag two extra points, the Canadian did well to round the ‘keeper but somehow scuffed wide with the goal gaping.

It would have been nice to snatch the win although a draw away from home is always a bonus.

Next up for the Reds: Norwich City.

Saturday 27th September.
