Hume Relieved

Iain Hume has spoken of his relief at being allowed to remain at Preston North End for the remainder of his original loan deal.

All week it has looked as though Humey would be back at Barnsley and in contention for a place in the line up against Hull City in front of the TV cameras but yesterday morning the news broke that Barnsley had allowed him to stay with Preston and had also brought back Paul Hayes from Preston on loan until January.

In the days between Barnsley asking for Hume back and the deal being struck, Hume did go public about his desire to remain at Preston where he is getting regular football. After the fiasco came to an end, he told the BBC: ‘The club’s have come to an agreement and obviously Hayesy’s gone the other way but I’m just happy to be here.’

Paul Hayes has come to Barnsley on an emergency loan deal from Preston after starting just six games since his move to Deepdale from Scunthorpe this summer.

Hume continued: ‘I’ve got a game on Saturday now for Preston rather than Barnsley so I’m just made up that things have finally been sorted out.’

I am pleased for Humey that he is somewhere that he is getting games. As much as I’d like to see him playing regularly for Barnsley and playing well, the fact is that Robins has made it clear he is not part of his plans and I’d sooner see Humey playing somewhere else than frustrated and miserable at our club.

One other quote I’d just like to pass comment on is the line from Hume: ‘I just wanted to be somewhere where I was given a fair crack of the whip.’

I don’t believe, and by all means disagree with me if you wish, that Humey has been given a fair crack of the whip since Robins came in. At the back end of last season he chipped in with a few important goals and I still believe he could be doing as good a job, if not better than, the strikers who are playing for Barnsley at the moment.

I certainly wish Hume well for the rest of his career and hope that there will be no bitterness at the manner of his departure from our club. He has had a lot of support from the Barnsley supporters over the last two years and I’d hate to see that turn sour.
