Match Report: Gainsborough Trinity

Whilst one half of the tiny Barnsley squad faced Frickley Athletic, the other travelled to the Northolme to take on Gainsborough Trinity.

A few trialists helped to eek out two full teams for the Reds who are still yet to make a third signing this summer, having brought in just one young striker for the development squad and a reserve keeper, namely Onome Sodje and David Preece.

Familiar faces lined up against the Reds for Gainsborough Trinity in the form of former Barnsley youngster Luke Beckett and promotion winning defender Adie Moses.

However there was only one face the travelling Barnsley eyes were on and it was that of Canadian international striker Iain Hume, who made his long awaited return to match action with an appearance off the bench in this game.

The early chances fell to Barnsley’s Jamal Campbell-Ryce, who was first denied by a good save from Gainsborough keeper Barnes and then fired a shot inches wide.

In form striker Kayode Odejayi thought he’d kept up his 1:1 goals to game ratio on 24 minutes when he crashed home a header from Campbell-Ryce’s cross but his effort was ruled out by the assistants flag.

It wasn’t all Barnsley however as ex-Red Luke Beckett misfired a couple of chances to give the Reds a scare or two in the first half.

The reds pushed on for an opener and almost found one through Onome Sodje who’s shot beat keeper Barnes but wasn’t struck hard enough to beat the scrambling goal line clearance from Greaves.

On the stroke of half-time Barnsley had their lead and Odejayi had his customary pre-season goal, barging his way past Gainsborough’s one-time saviour Greaves before sliding the ball home coolly.

Barnsley’s travelling support didn’t have to wait long after the restart to see the sight they’d all been waiting for. Iain Hume ran on to the pitch to a rapturous reception on 50 minutes, replacing youngster Onome Sodje. The striker Hume, who had returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines following an elbow from Sheffield United’s Chris Morgan almost made the perfect comeback, meeting Campbell-Ryce’s corner with his first touch but his header was denied by Barnes.

The Reds had further efforts denied in the second half as Hume failed to find the net with a curling free-kick which he won himself and trialist Prior sent an effort flying wide after a good through ball from Simon Heslop.
