Barnsley have a new number 1 – Luke Steele.

After the departure of Heinz Muller to FSV Mainz last month, the number 1 shirt was left unattended and erstwhile understudy keeper Luke Steele has taken it.

The 6 foot 2 inch ex Man Utd shot stopper penned a new two year deal a few weeks ago and will be in goal, barring any injuries, on August 8th at Hillsbrough.

Steele, 24, is delighted with the turn of events in the last few months having been forced out of the side early on in the season by German Heinz Muller and looking for another club by April.

But a string of costly errors from Muller opened the door for Steele to step in and he took the opportunity, pardon the pun, with both hands. His saves arguable kept the Reds in the league, particularly the one in the first half at Plymouth on the final day of the season which saw the game turn around and the Reds go on to win 2-1 and retain their Championship status.
