Who Should Barnsley Sign?

The summer transfer saga is proving fascinating throughout the country already with many more twists and turns to come I`m sure.

The main activity at Barnsley has so been away from the pitch with the appointment of a chairman and chief executive.

This to me shows that Barnsley are actually beginning to show more ambition and attempt to move the club forward.

Hopefully it won`t be too long until Steele, Cranie and O`Grady put pen to paper and with many strikers already on the radar I would like to focus on defenders.

We are crying out for a no nonsense experienced centre half and with the new ambition at the club I would like to see a Premier League old boy come in.

Richard Dunne and Matthew Upson are both free agents. They are both past their best but would do a fantastic job for Barnsley alongside Cranie.

Can we afford the wages they would want? The answer to that is no. But I would like to see Barnsley now try to get this type of player. Simply go and offer them the best deal possible and let Flicker sell them his vision on the pitch and the chairman and chief executive their vision off it.

They can either choose one final big pay day with a Championship big boy or come to little old Barnsley for the right reasons.

The chances of getting them would be slim but you don`t get if you don`t ask.

The new board members are very experienced when it comes to dealing with players and agents so who knows what could happen.

I have also just been looking at the list of free agent and there is plenty of quality out there. Unfortunately I do think many of them would risk going without a club than accept what Barnsley have to offer.

Vital readers let`s have below your lists of players Barnsley should attempt to sign. Whether it be realistic targets or players who you think would be unlikely to choose Barnsley such as the two above.

Also what if Steele and Cranie don`t sign their contracts? Where will that leave us and are there any goalkeepers out there who could do the business at Oakwell to the standard of Steele?

When Harry Kewell was a Free Agent I wanted us to take him on, but he’s gone back to Australia to play.

I would love Michael Higdon to join us, so hopefully he accepts what we have to offer. I’d also like to see a couple European talents join us from France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Italy (etc.). They’re unpredictable when it comes to English football, as they can struggle with the adaptation, but they can also tear the place apart.

I read on a Derby forum that Barnsley were interested in Theo Robinson (Jamaican International), though I doubt this is true. BUT if it were to happen, he could play as a Winger since he’s lightning quick, and the current team we have don’t have anything special in terms of running like an Olympian. Robinson was on loan at Huddersfield in April and played out the season with them. When he returned to Derby they made him available to transfer.

    So hey that’s a possibility.

It will usually come down to wages with a lot of players, but sometimes a player just wants to be playing regularly, so DF will have a job on his hands trying to convince certain players, but I know he’ll do his best to sell the clubs vision..!
Dunne or Upson would add great experience, but have both been injured recently, plus the wages issue would make it unlikely, but there will be plenty of names available and I’m sure DF will pull of a several good signings before pre-season starts.
