Barnsley manager Simon Davey insists he will get Jamaican international Jamal Campbell-Ryce back to his best in a red shirt.
Speaking to the Sheffield Star, the Welshman said:
‘I’d love to get Jamal back terrorising defences, but he’s probably lost his directness in his play,’
It was said that Championship rivals Reading had tabled a tempting bid for the Reggae Boy, who could have easily walked out of Oakwell in the January transfer window. But fortunately the little winger stayed put in South Yorkshire.
‘Whether that’s because there have been bids in for him, who knows?
‘He has played his best football in the central role this season rather than in a wide role.
‘At the start of the season he’d start in a wide position, but after 10-15 minutes we’d bring him into a central role – and he got goals from there.
Barnsley’s bad run and lack of creativity has seen Campbell-Ryce come deep to look for the ball, much to the frustration of the fans:
‘Perhaps we need to re-focus his game and perhaps take him 20-30 yards further up the pitch.
‘We want to make sure he has an impact on the opposition’s back four and not their midfield.’
But it must be said, that wherever Jamal plays, he is a threat, and is without a doubt playing the best football of his career so far.
